Global, multistakeholder and cross-sectoral debate on data is needed to bring nuance and common understanding to the opportunities and challenges that arise when dealing with our interconnected Datasphere. This roundtable brought together legal practitioners and data policy experts to discuss:
(1) Cross-border data challenges for both personal and non personal data and how the concepts “Data Sovereignty” and “Free Flow of Data” are leading to polarization and lack of trust.
(2) The current data governance ecosystem as presented in the Datasphere Initiative’s first flagship report “The Datasphere Governance Atlas”.
(3) The role that international law can play in generating agile frameworks and regulatory sandboxes to help responsibly unlock the value of data for all and move the international community in the direction of a collaboratively governed Datasphere.
