Digital identity systems are emerging in nearly every part of the world as a means of transitioning societies more and more into a digital future.
Although there are notable advantages to be gained from these technological advancements, it is essential to acknowledge that such benefits are not universal for all individuals. Hence, it is crucial to continuously ask a fundamental question regarding the development of these systems – who will genuinely benefit, and who may face exclusion? Additionally, it should be explicitly stated that the process of exclusion can inevitably result in discrimination and exploitation of vulnerable populations.
To address these concerns, this report developed as part of the Fall 2022 Research Sprint by the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, presents a framework of recommendations for good practices, ensuring that digital identity systems are created with an inclusive mindset and that it´s benefits are accessible to everyone.
