Recognizing the lack of practical tools and accessible knowledge resources to enable data sharing for development, the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data brought partners together to create a cookbook for Effective and Ethical Data Sharing at Scale. Based on the cookbook, the  Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data is releasing an online course that will be featured through the Datasphere Academy. The course is the pivotal extension of the 2022 cookbook and will be readily accessible to learners worldwide, all at no cost. In addition to the online course, new recipes have been added to the cookbook webpage.

Effective and Ethical Data Sharing at Scale

With just six years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), demand for more and better data to analyze progress and target interventions has grown. In this context, data sharing and access to privately held data are among the most sustainable ways to address pressing challenges in health, environment, social development, and more.

The cookbook titled “Effective and Ethical Data Sharing at Scale” serves as a comprehensive guide developed by the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data. It’s a practical resource tailored for organizations and individuals engaged in data collection, management, and dissemination for the SDGs. Drawing from diverse experiences and expertise, it offers strategies, case studies, and best practices to navigate the intricate landscape of data sharing, ensuring that data-driven initiatives make meaningful contributions to global sustainable development efforts.

New recipes for success

The update to the cookbook identifies additional drivers of effective data sharing in the development sector and builds upon the research and expert guidance underpinning the cookbook through a series of interviews with partners and contributors.

Hosted alongside the Datasphere Initiative’s online course on A Guide to Cross-border Sandboxes for Data, the e-learning course makes the cookbook accessible in an easy-to-digest format, with interactive exercises, quizzes, and dynamic graphics.

The course employs the same conceptual framework as the cookbook, using the data sharing food pyramid to facilitate an enriching learning experience for participants, explaining the underlying principles governing data sharing practices. By leveraging this familiar analogy, learners are equipped with a deeper understanding of the rationale, substance, and methodologies inherent in data sharing. Through a blend of knowledge checks, reflective exercises, and practical applications, participants are encouraged to internalize the concepts empowered to translate their newfound knowledge into action. Learners who engage in the course will receive a certificate of completion.
