A multi-disciplinary organization using academic research, data, and art to explore how the digitalization of urban security is changing the urban social contract, Edgelands Institute has joined the Datasphere Initiative as an in-kind partner.
The Edgelands Institute creates pop-up spaces that bring citizens, policymakers, academics, and other stakeholders into a dialogue about the way that digital tools are being used by city governments and transforming urban social fabric. From Geneva to Medellín, Edgelands Institute works with cities across the globe that have made innovative strides in their use of digital technologies, particularly in application to security.
“Exploring the space and boundaries between the “public” and “private” in the Datasphere is very important as is ensuring digital tools are inclusive and rights-respecting. Edgelands Institute is a pioneer when it comes to studying data governance in the context of cities and surveillance. The Datasphere Initiative and Edgelands Institute will support each other’s efforts on driving dialogue in the global south on inclusive data governance approaches and explore how other regions including Europe are developing policies to responsibly unlock the value of data for all.
