The Datasphere Initiative, D4D Network, and the Global Index on Responsible AI hosted a webinar on “Data for Artificial Intelligence in Africa: Trends and Challenges.”

The session was held on October 5th, at 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm UTC / 10:00 am – 11:30 am EST / 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm CEST.

In this event of the webinar series Let’s Talk About Data & AI, we discussed the main trends and challenges for the use of artificial intelligence in the African continent and, in particular, the role of data governance in support of responsible AI development.

This session aimed to spark a more comprehensive discussion around how the data and its governance are being used for AI developments in the region and the potential disparities that are created, including when AI solutions are provided by actors from the Global North with data from the global north. The webinar also showcased opportunities to engage in the Datasphere Initiative’s Africa Forum on Sandboxes for Data and discussed how sandboxes can be used to test and innovate AI models to responsibly unlock the value of data for Africa.
