Research Associate /Consultant – Datasphere Initiative (Africa)

The Datasphere Initiative is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate/Consultant to support our work in Africa. This is a dynamic and multifaceted role that offers the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas, including research, project management, policy analysis, and communications. Individuals must be based in an African country, have extensive experience in the region and a strong local and regional network.

About the Role

In this role, you will play a critical role in supporting our efforts to advance data governance and sandboxes for data in Africa. You will work closely with a team of experts to:

  • Support Project Execution:
    • Assist with the implementation of the Sandbox pilot project in Africa, including supporting local meetings and events, community engagement and other tasks.
    • Coordinate partnerships and manage the implementation of Roadmaps.
  • Research and Writing:
    • Conduct research on data governance trends, policies, regulations and sandboxes in Africa.
    • Track the work of key organizations in the region working on data governance and innovative approaches to data regulation.
    • Assist in the development and drafting of reports, publications, and research workshops.
  • Policy Support:
    • Support the day-to-day policy activities of the Datasphere Initiative’s policy team, including tracking of policy trends, participating in meetings, and assisting with reporting.
  • Communications and Events:
    • Provide content for communication efforts, including the Datasphere Pulse Newsletter, blog posts, and social media.
    • Assist with the organization and execution of events, such as panels, workshops, and partner meetings.

Who We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as Social Sciences, Public Policy, or African Studies (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with experience in conducting desk research and data analysis.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to draft clear, concise, and compelling reports, proposals, and articles.
  • Experience working in Africa or with African issues is a strong asset.
  • Proven project management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interest in data governance, technology policy, and related issues.
  • Fluency in English, with fluency in Portuguese, French or Spanish a plus.
