In this blog post, Philipe shares his motivations for joining the Datasphere Initiative, his strategies for cultivating collaboration and partnerships, and his vision for the organization’s future.

Can you describe the journey that led you to the role of Director of Innovation at Datasphere Initiative? What drew you to the Datasphere Initiative?
Serendipity!
A book I read this year that really resonated with me is “The Serendipity Mindset” by Christian Busch. One of the ideas behind the book is that we can stay creative, motivated, and inspired if we remain focused on our guiding principles.
My whole career has been in the intersection of innovation, technology, and policy (in varying degrees at each time), and being at the DI will help me further that ikigai by promoting global collaboration for one of the deciding factors of the 21st century – Data!
What does the mission of “building agile frameworks to responsibly unlock the value of data for all” mean to you?
The words are clear, and so are the ideas behind it. But the mission needs to be the reason why we do things – it needs to be embedded into everything we do. So, from my perspective, it is what we need to be constantly asking ourselves.
Collaboration is often key to innovation. How do you envision fostering collaboration and partnerships within the Datasphere Initiative’s ecosystem?
It’s about all process and purpose. Process is what allows us to create the environment for collaboration, and it includes the methodologies we can use to bring that environment to life; purpose, then, is the intention that we weave into what we do in that environment, and is, therefore, what we add to make that environment the right one for fostering disruption.
Do you have a book, podcast, or other resource that has significantly influenced your thinking recently?
Two, actually. I already mentioned “The Serendipity Mindset” above. Besides that, I would have to say “Principles” by Ray Dalio – I read it originally right when it was published but re-read it recently, as it is a book I often refer to my mentees and to founders I advise.
Is there anything else you’d like the Datasphere Initiative community to know about you or your vision for the organization’s future?
I always think about how we can (and should) bring our whole selves to work. We’re inherently diverse in our thoughts, interests, and views, and only by being our whole selves can we really do our best. Doing that is actually a critical success factor in building teal organizations – which is where I think we should aspire to be!

Philipe is a senior executive with extensive background in the intersection of technology, innovation, policy, and governance.
To traditional government and enterprise settings, Philipe brings deep experience in technology and innovation, having served clients in government and in Fortune 500 and led dozens of multimillion dollar engagements in high tech, telecom, and financial services. In these capacities, Philipe has been nominated representative in many government and industry forums at national, regional, and international levels, such as the UN, ITU, and OAS.
Philipe is also a venture capitalist and angel investor, a subject matter expert on AI, and a lecturer and published author on strategy, policy, and innovation. He is a board member and chairman of the board of five leading startups in diverse sectors.
Philipe holds an MA in International Affairs & Public Policy from the University of California in San Diego, a BA in International Affairs from the Universidade de Brasilia, and is working on his Executive MBA from Dom Cabral Foundation.
