Data sharing protocols
Bottom-up creation of special groups of people or entities is a way to responsibly share data and equitably distribute the value thus created. A range of techniques, such as homomorphic encryption, federated learning or multi-party computation offer new and innovative ways to unlock access to data while mitigating risks. However, setting the corresponding governance arrangements remains a complex endeavor.
With funding from the Omidyar Network, the Datasphere Initiative will develop modular charters for data communities with expert partners. The purpose of this project is to reduce transaction costs and provide predictability, as part of a general protocol approach for responsible data-sharing.
A first use case will cover the data-sharing required to compute indirect CO2 (so-called Scope 3) emissions along supply chains.
